Hysteretic Steel Bearings
When the engineer finds that base isolation is not possible with rubber bearings, an alternative solution is the hysteretic bearing. This bearing acts as a normal bearing during normal opperations, but upon sudden impact force such as seismic, the LUDs of the bearing lock up and movement is only attained through the yielding of E shaped steel plates that absorb energy as they bend. The potential for energy absorption is much greater with this system than any other.
